For being the Mile High City’s most historic block, Larimer Street today is just a alive as it was back in 1858. Back in the summer of 58 a party of Georgians along with Green Russell discovered gold and settled camp were Speer Boulevard crosses Larimer Street. They named it Auraria! Soon more would arrive and set up town stakes across the creek and called it St. Charles,(15th & Larimer St).
They later returned back to Kansas for the winter and returned to the area again that spring.
Just after their departure, another group from Kansas arrived at St. Charles headed by General William H. Larimer Jr. He liked what he found and immediately staked out a town for himself as he sent some of his men off to Levensworth. They arrived before the original St. Charles representatives and “jumped” the claim, renaming the town site Denver City after James Denver, the territorial governor of Kansas. The main street was named after General Larimer. Larimer and his son constructed a 16-foot by 20-foot cabin shortly after they arrived. The down-to-earth General had an interesting sense of humor; the doors to his cabin were coffin lids! Also, his cabin had the only “glass” window in Denver.
The city block of Larimer Square housed Denver’s first bank, bookstore, photographer and dry goods store. The block was also the site of Denver’s first post office (where Nest is currently located) as well as the site of the first theater.
Larimer Street – Today
Today Larimer Street is about as modern as can be while hanging on to it’s old world charm. The buildings were built in the ornate Victorian style and most from materials found within Colorado. Today Larimer Street has become one of Denver’s hottest dinning destinations. Most all chef driven and original. The street is also lined with trendy bars and local counts.
A very popular and well known restaurant I would like to encourage you to try is called Bistro Vendome. Named for the Place Vendome in the heart of Paris, this cozy bistro is a favorite among cosmopolitan Denverites seeking authentic Parisian bistro fare combined with fresh local ingredients. Tucked away behind the bustle of Larimer Street, Bistro Vendome has the feel of well-kept secret. It’s seasonally-changing menu crafted by executive chef Jennifer Jasinski offers a diverse array of bistro classics, including Noix de Saint Jacques Grilléz (grilled scallops) and Confit de Canard (duck confit.) Leave Denver behind and spend an evening in the Premiere Arrondissement. Bon appétit !
Great Place to Shop for the Holidays!
Larimer Street is where historic charm meets holiday cheer! After grabbing a bite to eat, take a walk and enjoy the lights and wonder in some of the small shops where you bound to find something for everyone on your list. Chances are you’ll find more personal and unique gifts than in department stores.
