Kure Beach Pier, North Carolina
A moment in time, ( un moment dans le temps) you realize their are things in this world much bigger and greater than you and life is a journey not a destination. Kure Beach Pier dates back to 1923. It’s the oldest fishing pier along the Atlantic coast. An icon in it’s own right. The memories it holds in the hearts of so many. The secrets it’s shares with those whose paths have crossed it, it will always keep. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to capture it through my lens. Kure Beach Pier spans out from the beach 711 feet into the water, stands 26 feet above the water and a proud 22 feet wide.
History
Built by Hans Kure, the pier has long become a legacy along the Carolina coast line. It all started when Mr. Kure bought a 1,500-acre tract after having the foresight and desire to bring people together. Hans Kure was a ship’s captain and between he and his wife Ellen, spoke eight languages and used it to connect with visitors which added to the overall sucess to the business.
In the early 1900’s Kure Beach was isolated and the only way to access beside horse and buggy, was by a steamship and then a short ride a mile or two of railroad. Over the decades it has hosted many of fishing tournaments. Kure Beach is about 15 miles south of Wilmington and less than 200 miles east of Charlotte. Aside from this main attraction past the boardwalks and beach retreats is the Historical Confederate Fort Fisher that played a huge part in the Civil War. An area definitely worth exploring.
